What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

What is DEF

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) has emerged as the leading method for controlling diesel engine nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. NOx is a pollutant that damages our health and the environment by contributing to acid rain and the formation of smog. Since 2010, federal regulations under the U.S. Clean Air Act have set strict limits on emissions for new diesel vehicles.

DEF is a high-purity solution of 32.5 percent automotive-grade urea and 67.5 percent pure de-ionized water that reduces NOx emissions by working with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emission-reducing technology. It is an odourless, colourless, non-flammable, and non-toxic solution that is harmless to people, equipment, and the environment.

DEF is injected into the exhaust systems of SCR-equipped diesel engines, and it breaks down NOx molecules into harmless nitrogen and water.

DEF Quality

With MacEwen DEF you are assured product quality from production to your truck’s tank. Leading equipment and trucking fleets depend on MacEwen DEF, which is certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). This ensures that our DEF meets diesel engine manufacturer requirements.

Some DEF suppliers are selling non-certified DEF, which means that no regulatory body is auditing that supplier to determine whether the product is meeting specifications. DEF that does not meet API specifications will damage your engine’s SCR system, leading to replacement, which will cost you thousands of dollars. Always ask whether your supplier’s DEF is API-certified.

What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

API Certification

What does API Certification mean? And why is it important?

API Certification

Today, diesel engines must meet stringent emissions requirements. To meet these requirements, many diesel engine manufacturers use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) which injects DEF into the diesel exhaust stream to convert NOx into harmless gasses. For the SCR unit to operate properly, the DEF must meet an exacting purity standard. This standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and audited by the American Petroleum Institute (API), is intended to ensure that the diesel exhaust fluid used in SCR-equipped diesel engines provides the quality required by engine manufacturers to preserve the emissions control system and the environment.

The API Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Certification Program is a voluntary program designed to certify and monitor the quality characteristics of diesel exhaust fluid intended for use with diesel engines. Diesel exhaust fluid marketers that have demonstrated that their quality control processes satisfy the requirements of the most recent and applicable edition of ISO 22241, Diesel engines – NOx reduction agent AUS 32, may be licensed to display the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark.

Why DEF Storage Matters?

Maintaining the purity of DEF is crucial so that it can contribute to the efficient operation of SCR-equipped engines over time.

Because DEF is corrosive to aluminum and some metals, DEF storage containers and all materials that come into contact with the solution must be made of stainless steel or HDPE plastic. Storing DEF in non-approved containers will contaminate the solution and damage your engine and the SCR system long-term.

Temperature is an important consideration if DEF is being stored outside. DEF will freeze at -11 degrees Celcius. However, no quality issues will arise from the freezing and thawing process. MacEwen’s DEF experts can help you determine your business’s most convenient and economical storage solution.

How to Handle DEF

Guidelines for Proper DEF Handling:

DOs

  • Ensure that the designated diesel exhaust fluid tank is exclusively filled with the appropriate fluid; both the tank and nozzle should be clearly labelled for this purpose.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the diesel exhaust fluid to prevent contamination by dust and dirt; employ only approved equipment for dispensing and filling.
  • Although handling diesel exhaust fluid does not necessitate protective clothing, it’s crucial to exercise caution.
  • Recognize that diesel exhaust fluid can freeze at -11 degrees Celcius; if frozen, simply thaw it for use without compromising its integrity.
  • Utilize diesel exhaust fluid that comes in dedicated, sealed packaging to ensure its quality.
  • Store diesel exhaust fluid appropriately to prolong its lifespan, which can extend up to one year.
