Overview What is diesel exhaust fluid?
Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) has emerged as the leading method to control diesel engine nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, a pollutant that damages our health and the environment by contributing to acid rain and the formation of smog. Since 2010, federal regulations under the U.S. Clean Air Act have set strict limits on emissions for new diesel vehicles.
DEF is a high-purity solution of 32.5 percent automotive grade urea and 67.5 percent pure de-ionized water that works with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emission-reducing technology to reduce NOx emissions. DEF is an odorless, colorless, non-flammable and nontoxic solution that is harmless to people, equipment and the environment.
DEF is injected into the exhaust systems of SCR-equipped diesel engines and breaks down NOx molecules into harmless nitrogen and water.
Storage & Quality Only the best methods
DEF storage
It is crucial to maintain the purity of DEF so that it can contribute to the efficient operation of SCR-equipped engines over time.
Because DEF is corrosive to aluminum and some metals, DEF storage containers and all materials that come into contact with the solution must be composed of either stainless steel or HDPE plastics. Storing DEF in non-approved containers will contaminate the solution and lead to long-term damage to your engine and the SCR system.
Temperature is an important consideration if DEF is being stored outside. DEF will freeze at -11 degrees Celcius. However, no quality issues will arise from the freezing and thawing process. MacEwen’s DEF experts can help you determine the most convenient and economical storage solution for your business.
DEF quality
With MacEwen DEF you are assured product quality from production to your truck’s tank. Leading truck manufacturers depend on MacEwen DEF, which is certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). This ensures that our DEF meets diesel engine manufacturer requirements.
Some DEF suppliers in Canada sell non-certified DEF, which means that no regulatory body is checking to determine whether the product is high quality and meets specifications. Over time, low-quality DEF will damage your engine’s SCR system, leading to replacement, which will cost you thousands of dollars per engine.
Always ask whether your supplier’s DEF is API certified.
We Are Certified API Certification
The American Petroleum Institute created the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Program to let customers know when they’re buying high-quality DEF that has met diesel engine manufacturer requirements.
This voluntary program monitors and measures the quality of DEF products, allowing suppliers whose DEF has met the program’s specifications to display the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid certification mark. If you see the mark, you’re buying high-quality DEF.
Some DEF suppliers in Canada sell DEF that is not certified. This means that no regulatory body is checking to determine whether the product is high quality and meets specifications. Over time, low quality DEF will damage your engine’s SCR system, leading to replacement costing thousands of dollars per engine.
MacEwen DEF is API certified, so you know you’re getting the purest, highest quality DEF for your valuable engines.
